Position Opening: Library Assistant, Part-Time

The Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library welcomes qualified candidates to apply for the position of Library Assistant (part-time, 17 hours per week).

This position assists library users with technology, reference, reader’s advisory and general library services while contributing to programs, displays and daily operations. The role requires strong communication skills, sound judgment and a commitment to excellent customer service.

This is work that involves a responsibility for performing paraprofessional librarian duties or specialized non-librarian duties in support of the accredited library staff. The incumbent is expected to work independently while adhering to established procedures. The work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Library Director. Does related work as assigned.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Provides technology instruction to library users and assists with the use of computers, databases and the Internet
Provides reference, research techniques and reader’s advisory services to library users under the direction of a librarian
Creates in-house flyers, book lists, bookmarks and other promotional materials
Prepares library exhibits and displays
Conducts tours, book talks, story hours, multimedia programs and assists with program scheduling
Stays informed of current technology trends
Prepares statistical and narrative reports, memos and correspondence
Provides feedback on the effectiveness of programs, makes recommendations and prepares reports as required
Performs cash and credit card handling as required

SKILLS
Good knowledge of public library services, principles and practices
Working knowledge of current technology, standard computer applications, library software and proficiency in computer and keyboarding skills
Working knowledge of bibliographic tools, reference sources and online search tools
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Pleasant, effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently
Ability to exercise discretion, use good judgment and maintain confidentiality
Ability to maintain records and prepare accurate reports
Basic mathematical skills
Ability to supervise the work of others

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work an assigned schedule
Physically capable of bending, lifting, reaching and pushing loaded book carts
May be assigned at Village Branch in Haverstraw or Main Library in Garnerville

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An Associate’s degree or equivalent college credits (minimum of sixty (60) credits)
Three (3) years of paid work experience performing clerical, technical or administrative duties in a library setting; or a Bachelor’s degree or higher
Appointee must be a legal resident of New York, New Jersey or Connecticut

SALARY & APPOINTMENT
The salary is $25.00 per hour
This is a part-time position with a maximum of 17 hours per week
This is a permanent appointment under the Rockland County Department of Personnel
