Need community service?

Volunteering at the Library
Do you need community service hours? HKDPL can help! Sign up to volunteer at the library and help with programs, collection development, and other various tasks. Volunteers that live within the North Rockland Central School District will take priority over those who do not.
Note: You must make an appointment to volunteer, and filling out the form does not always guarantee an appointment due to limited opportunities each day. Please do not use your school email when filling out the form, we may not be able to respond to you if you do.
Be part of Teen Council at HKDPL!
Interest meeting on Friday, August 28, 4 PM at the Main Library
First Meeting: September, TBD
The purpose of the HKDPL Teen Council (otherwise known as a Teen Advisory Board) is to provide local young adults with leadership, planning and interpersonal skills they can take with them into their future. Teen Council will also provide a crucial role in service and support of people and organizations in Haverstraw and neighboring areas. Membership is open to teens 13 and up who live within the North Rockland Central School District.
Why should I join?
- Volunteer service hours for school, college, religion, etc.,
- Looks amazing on college and job applications,
- Build important social and professional skills like leadership, commitment, reliability, and communication,
- Helping the community you live in & having a say in library offerings,
- Extra benefits like pizza and/or lunch parties, special merch, fun activities and more!
What is expected of me?
- Sign a contract to show your commitment to Teen Council (and have your parent or guardian sign a permission slip if you’re under 18)
- Attending a minimum of 6 monthly meetings over the course of the school year (September through May)
- Think about how you want to help your community and ways to accomplish those goals, and work with your peers to get it done!
- Be able to attend offsite (out of the library), local volunteering opportunities with enough notice
What kind of things will we be doing?
Examples of volunteer projects include but are not limited to:
- Organizing food, toy, and supply drives for various charities,
- Developing library programs from start to finish,
- Collection development (having a say in what the library offers),
- Environmental cleanups,
- Helping out with food banks,
- Assisting the elderly,
- Giving time to animal shelters
If you have an idea for a service project, bring it to the group! There are endless opportunities to help in our community.

Submit a Book Review
Earn two (2) hours of community service for each review submitted (a maximum of 4 per month). Once approved, certificates are provided within seven (7) business days of receipt. Books reviewed must be written for YA or higher. We have also implemented the use of an AI checker; AI is not allowed and will result in a denial of the community service hours.
Please do not use your school email when submitting your review, we may not be able to email your letter if you do.
